Resumes and Cover Letters

Your resume is a marketing tool that highlights your experience, accomplishment, and skills that match the needs of a specific position. Together with the cover letter, the "job" of this marketing tool is clear: to win you an interview.

The first page of your resume needs to be customized to show that you possess the required and preferred position requirements. Most job seekers send out too many resumes and rely too much on the cover letter to make their case.

While there is no right format for everyone, the general rule is to use a chronological resume (most employers' preference) if your most recent position is the most similar to the position you are seeking. If you are a career changer or returning to an earlier career, starting the first page with functional categories will help employers see the relevance of your skills and accomplishments.

Resume and Cover Letter Services

Nearly every client who has come to me for resume and cover letter assistance has increased their rate of positive response (i.e. invitations to interviews). I offer resume services in a number of ways to meet different budgets and needs:

In one individual session I can give you feedback on your current resume, recommendations for a format, suggestions for improvement in copy to highlight your strengths, and two to four examples of resumes and cover letters from other successful job seekers. You then revise your resume and cover letter and send it to me via e-mail for final editing suggestions.

If you don’t have a fairly current resume, two or three individual sessions may be needed to select a format, articulate your most competitive skills, and draft a cover letter.
