Interviews

Individual Interview Preparation
Includes one individual session to plan interview strategy and one practice session. Emphasizes practice of PAR (Problem/Action/Results) stories.
$110
Interview Clinics
Two sessions. Limited to four people for individual attention.
$50
The purpose of the first session of the interview clinic is to develop strategies to use when asked common interview questions:
  • You will learn how to be proactive and convey key strengths, irrespective of the questions that are asked.
  • How to minimize your perceived weaknesses and questions that you fear.
  • Develop compelling stories/examples that communicate problems that you faced, actions that you took, and results that you have achieved (called the PAR approach).

The second session provides an opportunity to practice your answers in an atmosphere of kind, constructive feedback. You may tape recording your responses. Research shows that practice strongly correlates with success in an interview. Leslie Myleus sent me the note to the right about the importance of practicing PAR statements when she was selected out of 219 candidates.

"Today is my first day of work at TriMet! I got the position of Event Representative in the marketing department, and am looking forward to working in the newly-formed promotions division with some really great people. Thanks for everything, especially the interview preparation; I think having prepackaged PAR statements ready at the drop of a hat help the confidence level, even if those questions never come up in an interview."

Resumes and Cover Letters
A resume is your marketing tool that highlights your experience, accomplishment, and skills that match the needs of a specific position. Together with the cover letter, the "job" of this marketing tool is clear: to win you an interview.

The format and content can be in either chronological or functional format (or a mixture of the two). While there is no right format for everyone, the general rule is to use a chronological resume (most employers' preference) if your most recent position is the most similar to the position you are seeking. If you are a career changer or returning to an earlier career, a functional format will help employers see the relevance of your skills and accomplishments.

I have helped people craft the following resumes:

Jessica Hurley's resume is a good example of a chronological resume in a creative field.

Erik Blender's resume exemplifies a chronological resume with a strong summary to insure that the reader understands the relevancy of Eric's international experience to other non-profit organizations.

Michele Rainier uses a functional format to highlight her strengths in teaching, the arts, and as a team player.

Jon Pampush also selects a functional approach in his resume, which is targeted to open doors to a new career in the sustainable products industry.

Resume and Cover Letter Services
I can truthfully say that nearly every client who has come to me for resume and cover letter assistance, has increased their rate of positive response (i.e. invitations to interviews). I offer resumes services in a number of ways to meet different budgets and needs:

$50-$75 depending on the amount of editing needed.

One initial face-to-face session includes feedback on your current resume, recommendations for a format, suggestions for improvement in copy to highlight your strengths, and two to four examples of resumes and cover letters from other successful job seekers. You then revise your resume and cover letter and send it to me via e-mail for final editing suggestions.

The fee ranges from $110 to $225 depending on the complexity and number of revisions needed. This package averages $140 with the higher end of the range for people who need help clarifying the goal of their resume, desire a few versions and/or need executive resumes.

If you do not have a draft of a fairly current resume, this option starts with helping you select a format and identify key strengths, with the final product being your resume and one cover letter on a disk. Two to three individual sessions plus e-mail correspondence are provided. I generally do the typing.
